SPUTNiK 2 LAUNCHiNG LAiKA
featuring
Beta Cloud
+ NAW + The Sales Department
+ GENERAL CHAOS VISUALS
Tues. Nov. 3rd @ Supermarket . 268 Augusta Ave
.
Kensington Market . just south of College. Map + info here
PiNG doors open at 8pm . 1st set at 8:30 . $6

. Beta Cloud . Beta Cloud aims to span the sonic ground between
avant/improv/instrumental performance and ambient/drone/dj sound
installation. All compositions are performed improvised in real time.
Noise, hiss, and dynamic peaks, sub and supersonics are intentional
and controlled to ensure a maximum lo-fi listening experience. The aim
of Beta Cloud is to provide intensity, relaxation, positive aggression,
and a sense of passionate response to all listeners.

NAW . Montreal ex-pat naw (Neil Wiernik) who currently calls
Toronto his home, began composing electronic music in 1988 with
explorations in audio art and experimental music. Neil's interest in
sound and technology has lead him to a continued questioning and
refinement of audio tools and modes of production resulting in
experimentation with altered instruments, modified devices, and
custom software environments. Neil's music could be described
as warm, atmospheric, and cinematic electronic music. The sound
design of naw is firmly grounded in the rich traditions of dub studio
culture but can also be weighed alongside formal contemporary
composition. His music was described in "The Wire" as having
" ...the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the murk
and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays." Neil has released
music on various labels including noise factory records and on
elevation recordings
for his most recent project whisper room.

In addition to his recording career Neil is an accomplished curator
and digital media artist, he has shown work in a variety of traditional
and non-traditional spaces since the late 1980's. His projects have
included works in video, radio, print, and internet diffusion as well
as other non-gallery spaces including derelict buildings, billboards,
pirate airwaves, and public space. Neil has presented projects at
the Finland Contemporary Museum, ISEA, Subtle Technologies
Conference, La SAT, The Medusa Complex, Mutek Festival and
The Music Gallery. When Neil is not occupied with audio/visual
musings he steps into his co-managing editor role on vagueterrain.net
an online digital arts quarterly and is a member of the board of directors
for MusicWorks magazine. His online HQ is www.phoniq.net

THE SALES DEPARTMENT . The Sales Department is MD Matheson
who performed last at the PiNG in the C'est What/Club Nia days as
Beef Terminal. The music of The Sales Department departs from
the sonic and effects laden guitar work of Beef Terminal as there
is a heavier electronic feel to his music now, focused on an emotional
and mental connection with the music, through classic IDM rhythmic
structures and ambient soundscapes that ultimately work as time
machines. As with Beef Terminal, the music is still designed to reflect
life in the urban and suburban landscapes. The dichotomy of the messy
city and the clean cut lawns of the suburbs. This is music for travelling between opposing worlds. The Sales Department has recently released
an new album
Measured Life.

. General Chaos Visuals . The Chaos guys (Stephen Lindsey and
Eric Siegerman
) will be back to light up the PiNG with their unique,
compelling and mind bending light paintings.

Tues. Aug. 18th @ Supermarket . 268 Augusta Ave.
Kensington Market . just south of College. Map + info here
PiNG doors open at 8pm . 1st set at 8:30 . $6

. Wally & CJ Jericho . On August 17th 1999, Wally Jericho brought
his horns and other musical toys out to perform at the very first PiNG.
Now, 10 years later, we're returning to the street where it all started,
Augusta Ave. in Kensington Market, so we've invited Wally back
to kick off our second decade. Wally will be performing with a new
generation - his son, CJ Jericho on guitar.

. Kalte . Deane Hughes of Akumu and rik maclean of mara's
torment
are pleased to present their collaborative ambient/abstract
project Kalte as part of THE AMBiENT PiNG's 10th anniversary
celebrations. The music of Kalte crosses a range of electronic
sub-genres including zero-bpm, musique concréte and deep
ambient to produce dense and eerie soundscapes. Using the
process of improvised tonal manipulation found on their releases
"The Lanthanide Series"
(Stasisfield, 2008) and "Glaciations"
(Dark Winter, 2009), Deane and rik will be sharing Kalte's musical
vision of isolation and darkness in a live setting for the very first time.
Also in celebration of the PiNG's 10th, Deane is releasing his new
DVD from AKUMU, "Tapeten: Video Anthology 2005-2008."
The DVD is a collection of experimental and abstract videos spanning
3 years of AKUMU's visuals, re-mixed in 5.1 surround sound and
available for the first time at the PiNG! For more information about
Kalte
and to download exclusive 'net only releases, please visit www.kaltemusic.com

. dreamSTATE . Electronic soundscape artists Scott M2 and
Jamie Todd
of dreamSTATE played the third PING event on
August 31st, 1999. They began curating THE AMBiENT PiNG in
January 2000 and after presenting hundreds of PiNG concerts
across the city are very proud to perform at the PiNG's Tenth
Anniversary. Invited by rik of the ping things label to release a
new album for the occasion, dreamSTATE are currently finalizing
"A Decade Dreaming"
, a selection of soundscapes recorded live
at their PiNG performances throughout the last 10 years. Perhaps
you were at some of those shows. Please join dreamSTATE again
as they present a set of old and very new works for 2009.

. General Chaos Visuals . Stephen Lindsey and Eric Siegerman
have long defined the visual style of the PiNG with their unique
analog light paintings. They are also the artists who hold the record
for most PINGs played. We are thrilled that General Chaos will be
returning again to illuminate this event.

Phil Ogison
returns with a live version (really live) of his new 'live'
studio release, Six Ways To Undo The Horizon. As Phil describes it,
"Basically it's just me, the guitar, and mod pedals. The whole project
is a 'back to basics' live improvisation thing, a more experimental
ambient expression. Me talking to the guitar and the guitar
talking back to me."

. LORNE DAVID THOMSON . After a decade of travel and living in
South East Asia, Lorne returned to Toronto in August of 2008 and
began playing with the psychedelic/dub/jam band Harold as their

PiNG doors open at 8pm . 1st set at 8:30 . $6

THE AMBiENT PiNG and New Adventures in Sound Art present
RADiO iN AMBiENCE
as part of the Deep Wireless festival at the NAISA
Space
in the Artscape Wychwood Barns at 601 Christie Street, Studio #252.
The Artscape Wychwood Barns are located on the east side of Christie Street
just 2 blocks south of St. Clair West and few blocks west of the St. Clair West
Subway. This is a great chance to have a look at this cool new art venue.
The
cozy concert setting of the NAISA Space will allow for an intimate
affair to catch our musical friends Kristen Roos
, Anna Friz and
Nilan Perera
play with and bend the airwaves.

. Kristen Roos is an artist whose approach to creating sound art usually involves
a translation, or change, from one state to another. Objects normally used to bring
information in a particular way are repurposed, and reconstructed into new vibrating
forms. These temporary structures hope to inspire infinite interpretations for the
objects and spaces that make up the world around us.

Ferry Crossing Interpreted & Vinegar Factory One by Kristen Roos
and Anna Friz. This performance will consist of two fifteen-minute pieces.
The first is based on a score that Kristen created from a collage of field
recordings gathered on Vancouver Island, Cortes Island and the ferry
between Cortes Island and Quadra Island. Together they will recreate
this Ferry Crossing using a theremin, radios, and various amplified objects.
The second piece originates from a performance at the Vinegar Factory
in Vancouver, for bowed fire bells, amplified wire brush, tape recorder,
theremin, harmonica, kazoo, and radios.

. Nilan Perera is a sonic explorer and improviser whose work expands the language
and techniques of experimental electric guitar performance. In his unusual approach
to the guitar, Perera utilizes preparations of assorted paraphernalia such as swizzle
sticks, paper clips, metal brushes and the like, as well as feedback and a variety of
electronic effects.

. Flowers Of Hell . Based in London and Toronto, the Flowers Of Hell
are a trans-Atlantic experimental orchestra who explore the intersecting
points of classical & blues-based musical forms. Built around timbre-
to-shape synaesthetic visions, their April 2009 CD & LP 'Come Hell
Or High Water'
features collaborators from the Patti Smith Group,
John Cale’s band, Spiritualized, Broken Social Scene, & others. Pete
‘Sonic Boom’ Kember of Spacemen 3& E.A.R. has mentored
them
through their two albums, and after catching a number of London
shows, Kevin Shields had them open for My Bloody Valentine last fall.

With an eight member line up, they will be eschewing their regular set
for a special AMBiENT PiNG performance of ‘Swings And Roundabouts’,
a semi-structured/semi-improvised work lasting 30 - 40 mins. The piece
is a journey through layers of drones rising, falling, & evolving, while
strings, horns, & woodwinds exchange solos overtop, interspersed
with feedback guitar, orchestral drums, singing saw, and
various tremeloed instruments.

. Beta Cloud is C.Pace; a western classical and jazz educated
performer.
The aim
of Beta Cloud is to provide intensity, relaxation, positive aggression,
and a sense of passionate response to all listeners.

. Finally the snow has melted up here in the great white north so
for our first show of the spring we're heading back to The Central
to bring you someone new as well as welcoming back another
PiNG
original.

. 8.30 . Wally Jericho is the original PiNGer as he was the 1st
performer at the 1st PiNG way way back in August of 1999. As
usual,
Wally's been bursting with creativity lately and is busting
to break out his regularly evolving rig of portable yet powerful
sound toys to treat us to a sampling of the musical ideas which
have recently arrived at the Jericho Station.
We're expecting
lots of looping fun as the man with the horn and so many
other instruments brings his magical sounds back to the
PiNG
stage.

. 9.45 . Ruzan Orkestar is a local toronto band which evolved from
the ashes of an old solo project. Renoir (Egin Kongoli) has in its
second year formed into a six-piece collective now compromising
of Egin Kongoli, Stefan Ho, Cydney Clark, Calvin Young,
Patricia Auchterlonie
, and Gabriel P. Ruzan's many influences
range from bands belonging to the "post-rock" and ambient genres,
classical composers, to hardcore bands from the eighties and the
underground hardcore bands of the nineties.

. Ortiz blends found sounds, bubbling static, synthesizer malfunctions
and guitar noodling, exploring melancholy melodies and lonely notes
to create ghostly soundscapes that evoke dub and folk music in equal
measures. His live performances take the listener on a dreamy ride,
recalling pastoral landscapes and haunted woods, crescendos building
and receding as gentle guitars and far-away vocals drift in and out
of the mix. Ortiz has self-released several albums of material, in
addition to releases on Vague Terrain and ping things, which
can be downloaded at ortiz.ca

. Joining us for the second set will be the return of quasiMODAL
featuring cheryl o, Eric St-Laurent & Steven Sauvé for an

comfortable sociable space of The Central (just west & south of
the Bathurst Subway Station beside Honest Ed's & Suspect Video.
(BTW - besides their fine beers they also serve delicious meals.)

Like past anniversary shows, we've invited some good friends
who have played a large part in the PiNG's history to perform.
The sonics will be provided by mara's torment (rik maclean from
ping things - who we're sure will be deeply inspired by the mighty
rains we've been having), Pholde (Alan Bloor aka Knurl - performing
on metal soundsculptures) and Whisper Room (a new ambient/improv supergroup with guitarist Aidan Baker from Nadja + ARC, Neil Wiernik
aka Naw on bass guitar and Jakob Thiesen from Students + The Reversibles on drum machine.) Of course it wouldn't be an anniversary
show without the evolving light painting of General Chaos Visuals,
so we're very happy to have Stephen Lindsey + Eric Siegerman
returning for their sixth PiNG anniversary show performance.

bar which has great beer on tap plus gourmet coffee and
munchies available.

For July 16th, Phil Ogison (The Devil In The Design)
is presenting four works entitled, 'Behind the seen'.
The concept for this project is an exploration of
situationist views of landscape and structures
in a historical framework.

These pre-recorded/live element works are comprised of found
sound collected around the Toronto Harborfront and archival
spoken word samples, digitally manipulated and arranged with
the addition of live electric guitar and keyboard synthesizer.
For this occasion, ten limited edition studio copies of
'Behind the seen'

PiNG doors open at 8pm . 1st set at 8:30 . $6 / PayWhatYouCan

NAW - Neil Wiernik (Whisper Room / dropfile) produces warm,
atmospheric, and cinematic electronic music with sound design
firmly grounded in the rich traditions of dub studio culture & formal
contemporary composition.

URM - Jamie Todd (dreamSTATE / SADU / NOiNO) explores
alien mutant psycho jazz, dark / light ambience, soundscapes &
sequencer driven pulse-music with a laptop filled with a virtual
mountain of soft synths and sound toys.

SRF - Kevin Doherty (Sleep Research Facility) is a dark ambient
artist from Glasgow, Scotland, now living in Toronto & specialising
in beatless ambient music of spacious, extended, richly-textured
sounds & throbbing undertones.

It's been a while since the PiNG has presented a show in a nice comfy
bar with good food and fine beers (Nia at C'est What?!!) - so we've
booked 3 terrific sound-artists to create the scapes & grooves
for a Tuesday night at The Central in the Annex.

Located right beside Honest Ed's and Suspect Video at 603 Markham St.,
The Central has all of the above + an intimate main-space to immerse
yourself in the performances + a connected room to reconnect with

Tues. Jan. 29th • NEW ARTiSTS FOR A NEW YEAR
Featuring Syzygia . Sleep Research Facility . Ortiz

@ the UNDERGROUND downstairs @ the DRAKE HOTEL
1150 Queen St. W @ Beaconsfield . W of Ossington . E of Dufferin
Tuesday January 29th . 9pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

Please note the later start time of 9PM.

. SYZYGIA . The project of Harrison Dahme, dealing with the
ambient and atmospheric.

. SLEEP RESEARCH FACILITY . Sleep Research Facility explores
notions of awareness and perception in the sub/unconscious listener.
Focusing primarily on sound bereft of rhythm based energies, SRF's
goal is to provide listening environments wherein the music simply
adds texture to the silence. A kind of “play me quiet” sound suitable
for listening to actively or passively depending on circumstances,
creating an aural experience which guides the mind through gentle
misdirection rather than forcing its attention, allowing listeners to
drift in their own diversified thoughts.

. ORTIZ . Laurier Brown finds the crinkly, skittering nuggets in
the white noise. His first Ortiz release The Crinkle and its Faces
was an exploration of glitchy layered noisescapes, almost
undetectable beats mingled with hiss and static. Dark dreams
for long winter nights put to tape, digitized, randomized, spliced,
split up, spit out. His second release, Salvage, further digs into
the sonic subconscious, carving subterranean passages under
ancient roots planted in the psych
ospiritual mulch. Hooves
draws from the ghosts left behind in the cracking pavement
where the groves once grew, remembering great herds, drifting
past gulls flying out to sea.

Tuesday November 27th • AN AUTUMN CHiLL
Featuring SHEN and Mark Thibideau from Repair

and the world premiere screening of SADU LiVE
@ THE PiNG with GENERAL CHAOS VISUALS

@ the UNDERGROUND downstairs @ the DRAKE HOTEL
1150 Queen St. W @ Beaconsfield . W of Ossington . E of Dufferin
Tuesday November 27th . 8pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

. SHEN . taken from the arcane taoist term for `refined energy' or `depth', shen is noah pred's outlet for lowtempo explorations of forwardthinking computer music. drawing inspiration from the eastern aesthetics of botanical architecture and geomantic techniques, shen evokes organic structures through lush ecologies of synthetic chords, deep textures and minimalist machinations. honing his craft through sets performed alongside the likes of monolake, deadbeat, shulman, lusine, and bluetech, his unique interpretation of the downtempo genre rapidly evolved into a distinctly recognizable sound. incorporating elements of electro, dub and minimal techno, shen's fluid funk is aimed equally at the public thrill of the dancefloor and the internal transcendence of headphones. with tracks appearing on the acclaimed leftcoast liquid vol. 1, floating point 3and various green samurai clan compilations, the debut shen fulllength, outlines, was released in december 2006 on native state records.

. Mark Thibideau . catch Mark Thibideau from the Toronto based techno threesome Repair as he takes a break from his regular duties as the Drake's excellent soundman for the PING to lay down some ambient synthesized spaced out grooves live on stage.

. SADU LiVE @ THE PiNG with GENERAL CHAOS VISUALS . to close
out the evening we'll be showing this just released DVD on the
big screen. This is the world premiere of the concert video
of SADU performing live with GENERAL CHAOS VISUALS on
June 13th 2006 at THE AMBiENT PiNG which was directed
and produced by David Sloma of Rockin' Films and
features a 5.1 surround sound mix (in dts and
Dolby Digital) by Jamie Todd.

SADU is Eric Hopper (Sylken), Terrence O'Brien (Anomalous
Disturbances) and Jamie Todd (URM, dreamSTATE and NOiNO).
GENERAL CHAOS VISUALS is Stephen Lindsey and Eric Siegerman

Tues. Oct. 30th • ALL HALLOW’S EVE-EVE
Featuring Ghost of a Flea and MiMo

@ the UNDERGROUND downstairs @ the DRAKE HOTEL
1150 Queen St. W @ Beaconsfield . W of Ossington . E of Dufferin
Tuesday Octiber 30th . 8pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

Ghost of a flea is a noise/ritual/literary project by Toronto-based
Nicholas Packwood. Ghost of a flea draws on techniques from
musique concrète, found sound and angelic grammar to produce
cinematic dark ambient music for opening the gates, for conjuring
lost love, for summoning and binding. 93 93/93

MiMo is a duo featuring multi-instrumentalists Matt Miller (laptop,
guitars and synth) and Samuel Morgenstein (drums, percussion
and electronics). Their live performances combine stripped down
compositions and skeletal arrangements to create wide-open
soundscapes for improvisation. This improvisation can take many
forms: solos, the laying down of a spontaneous groove, or an act
of inspiration whereby sounds, rhythms and phrases are captured
in real-time, then deconstructed, manipulated and re-organized,
until, in a fleeting moment, these elements collide into a distant
murmur, a pulse, an explosion, or even cacophony.

Way way back in the last century, THE AMBiENT PiNG began
presenting live multimedia performances featuring innovative
and experimental artists exploring the many forms of ambient
music. From 1999 to 2006, the PiNG produced AMBiENT PiNG
TUESDAYS
as a weekly series of live performances held in a
variety of nightclubs in the Toronto area. Since the late
summer of 2006 and after seven years of weekly shows,
the PiNG now presents AMBiENT PiNG TUESDAYS on
a monthly basis. In addition to this monthly series, the
PiNG
continues its tradition of periodically presenting
international and local artists live in a variety of
alternative concert spaces.

For our 343rd show, we celebrate 8 YEARS OF LiVE @ THE PiNG
and bring you a treat by presenting a heaping helping of some of
the many artists who have defined the flavour of the PiNG. Back
from last year's anniversary show are dreamSTATE (ambient
electronic soundscapes) and GENERAL CHAOS VISUALS
(psychedelic eye candy), who will be joined by AMBIENT-TV
(ambience by PiNG founder A. Sprogis), Synþ (percussive
synthetics from Terry Campbell's multi-year project),
A PRETTY SONIC SPLATTER (progressive electronics by
Anne Sukowski
of Building Castles out of Matchsticks and
Phil Ogison of The Devil in the Design), NOiNO (improvised
experimental with Jim Bailey, Matthew Poulakakis and
Jamie Todd) and SYLKEN (space music featuring Eric Hopper
with dreamSTATE's Scott M2 and Jamie Todd reprising their
past when all three played together as Radio Silence.).

To make the night even more special, NOiNO, SYLKEN and Synþ
will all be releasing their new CDs, so check out their new music
and all the other cool stuff at the ping things media table. Our

wonderful host, THE DRAKE UNDERGROUND, has given
us
the whole night to play, so come early and plan to stay late.

Tuesday July 31st DARK SUMMER NiGHTS 2
Featuring
the deep dark ambience of
mara's torment
and AKUMU

@ the UNDERGROUND downstairs @ the DRAKE HOTEL
1150 Queen St. W @ Beaconsfield . W of Ossington . E of Dufferin
Tuesday July 31st. 8pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

8.30 mara's torment rik and Sovaak return to the PiNG
stage to celebrate the release of the mara's torment compilation
set "mt96061". Featuring old favorites, new music and rare tracks
from the last ten years, this collection finally proves just how an
integral a force the sock monkey has been all this time. In keeping
with the idea of the comp, rik looks forward to playing re-imagined
work that will appeal to new and old fans alike. This performance will
also be accompanied by video by the brilliant and talented Sarah Grant
who has created work for a number of previous mara's torment performances. If you can only see one mara's torment show this
year, this is surely the one you want to see.

9.30 Akumu • After a recent break from live performances,
Toronto's Akumu (aka Deane Hughes) returns to THE AMBiENT PiNG bringing his brand of atmospheric ambience, shadowy beats and minimal electronic
manipulations.

Formed as a solo project in 2000, Akumu has released three full-length
albums on his own Spider Records label, a split CD with Andrew Duke
on Cohort Records as well as various compilations and net tracks.

Akumu has performed live across Ontario and Quebec, including 2005’s
Mutek festival in Montréal, and features projections of his distorted
photography, animated collages and 2D/3D video experiments.

For this performance at the PiNG, Akumu will be creating an eerie,
flowing soundscape that draws on new material from his upcoming
solo EP and from 2006's Cohort release.

Tuesday June 26th DARK SUMMER NiGHTS 1
Featuring
s:cage (dark electronics)
+ KNURL (metal machine noise)
+ visuals by VJ Carrie Gates

@ the UNDERGROUND downstairs @ the DRAKE HOTEL
1150 Queen St. W @ Beaconsfield . W of Ossington . E of Dufferin
Tuesday June 26th . 8pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

8.15 KNURL Knurl is Canada's best-known noise artist, working
in the style of the Japanese noise masters, and often referred to
as "Canada's King of Noise". He is known for his imaginative
performances where sculptures, machinery, household appliances
and even people are used as the primary sound sources which
are processed through an array of guitar pedals creating the
sonic torrent. Alan Bloor has graced our stage many times
as PHOLDE, but this will be the first time that he performs
at the PiNG as Knurl, the anti-music sound sculptor.

9.15 s:cage • what's astounding in s:cage's work is the ability of
mixing various moods through the assemblage of sounds. there is
beauty and aggression at the same time but there is no disruption;
it could be the symphony of an awakening megalopolis; a million
individuals living their daily lives at the same time. In s:cage's
sound space nothing is as it seems.

• VJ Carrie Gates is here all the way from Saskatoon to wrestle your
retinas with her sensual, psyched-out mix of visuals. Her recent live
video mixing work ranges from lush, abstract textures to dramatic,
punchy patterns, to sexy, enigmatic experiments with household
objects and the human body. Her work is sometimes dark and
mysterious, sometimes extremely vivid and visceral, and sometimes
it is hilariously poppy and bizarre. While never subjugating her visuals
to straight responses to the live sound, she collaborates with sound
artists to create new relationships between sound and vision. Carrie
uses Max/Jitter, Arkaos, Cosmic Painter, a hacked brain, live cameras,
and top secret feedback techniques to create synaesthetic
experiences
for audiences and inspire new ways of thinking.

Please note that for the June PiNG, the sets will be starting
15 minutes earlier than usual and we will be finishing up at 10PM
as the DRAKE HOTEL has a highly recommended live show
following the PiNG featuring RASTER-NOTON artists:
senking
(aka jens massel) and frank bretschneider.

This is an inspired bit of post PiNG late nite programming by
the DRAKE as RASTER-NOTON is an extremely interesting label
based in chemnitz / germany. RASTER-NOTON is meant to be a
platform - a network covering the overlapping border areas of
pop, art and science. They realize music projects, publications
and installation works. Common idea behind all releases is an
experimental approach - an amalgamation of sound, art and design.

Plan to stay late (we are) to catch the yatra-arts presentation
of the RASTER-NOTON summer session with performances by
frank bretschneider, senking, sans soleil w/ visuals by additv
and a i-pod dj set by bender.

Check with the DRAKE for ticket info.

duo since 2001 in Europe, Canada, the U.S. and Japan, and have
performed with John Butcher, Evan Parker, David Toop, Jin Hi Kim,
Kô Ishikawa, and Darren Copeland, among others. Their double-CD
" Gathering" (Spool), has received critical praise from the likes of
The Wire, Exclaim! and New York's Downtown Music Gallery.

"The duo mix tidal undulations of tone with the ability to pick
out sharp flecks of texture in complex aural environments."
The Wire

Additv (Rob King) is an artist, researcher and student in the
Communication and Culture masters program at Ryerson.
His works have focused on the social interactions between
people in an online environment, emergent systems,

Tuesday March 27th . 8pm - 11pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

• What do you get when you cross a blushing singer with stage fright
and a pair of methodical twins? A powerhouse of tension: part boy,
part girl, and completely magnetic. A threesome known as Repair.

The techno trio Repair returns to the PiNG for the third time and
for the third year in a row. Join the musically uncompromising
twin brothers, Mat and Mark Thibideau, as they lay down the
beats behind the lush, sultry vocals of frontwoman Dawn Lewis.

• Fresh from their ALMOST LiVE performance on PiNG RADiO
comes our new friends from Quebec, Anachronic XP.

Tired and bored of traditional hip-hop, Quebec City based
Anachronic XP began their experimentations in 1999 by evolving
their music into a mix of electronic soundscapes with hip-hop
beats and patterns. Anachronic XP is a fresh breath from the Quebec
electronic scene as they perform all the beats and scapes live onstage
with synths, samplers and control boards. Guitarist JFO joined the
band last year, bringing his flavour of slide guitar, effects and
synth to the mix.

Tues. Jan. 30th 2007 • Wally Jericho & URM
@ the UNDERGROUND downstairs @ the DRAKE HOTEL
1150 Queen St. W @ Beaconsfield . W of Ossington . E of Dufferin
Tuesday January 30th . 8pm - 11pm . PWYC (5$ suggested)

For the 1st PiNG of 07, we welcome back our old friend
Wally Jericho, the 1st performer at the 1st PiNG
way way back in August of 1999.

Wally's been bursting with creativity lately and is busting to
break out his new rig of portable yet powerful sonic toys
to treat the PiNG faithful to a sampling of the musical
ideas which have arrived of late to Jericho Station.

We're expecting lots of looping fun as the man with the horn
(and many other instruments) returns to the PiNG stage
for first time in two years with not one but two loopers.
(One can never have enough loopers in one's rig!)

Also on the bill, URM plugs the PC gaming accessories into
his laptop music box to perform a special set in surround sound,
featuring material from the Shadows of Light show which was
recently on AMBiENT PiNG RADiO.

Utilizing only a single laptop filled to the brim with a
virtual mountain of soft synths and sound toys, URM's
Jamie Todd (also of dreamSTATE, NOiNO and SADU)
will take us on a 3-D quadraphonic sonic journey which
explores alien mutant psycho jazz, dark ambience,
spacey soundscapes and sequencer-driven pulse.

• Before and Between Sets we'll be featuring more excerpts
from Kairos the splendid new DVD from Steve Roach featuring
his magnificent music merged with imagery from a variety of
visual artists: Lynn Augustein, Steve Lazur, Steven Rooke,
John Wadsworth
and John Vega with Roger King.
A gorgeous synthesis of sound and visions.

instruments, circuit-bent electronics, toys and found

THE AMBiENT PiNG's 7th ANNiVERSAY SPECiAL
mara's torment dreamSTATE naw
General Chaos Visuals

Thursday August 17th • Tranzac (Main Hall)

Has it really been a year since Dread Pirate rik and Sovaak the Scurvy
Sock Monkey
of mara's torment took to the high seas in search of
the mythic Jade Llama? Whoa, time sure does fly! In celebration of their
return to THE AMBiENT PiNG stage the pair have put together an eclectic
collection of sea shanties and singalongs designed to celebrate both the
excitement of their days at sea and the PiNG's Seventh Anniversary.
Needless to say rik and Sovaak look forward to sharing a bill with
both dreamSTATE and naw, and to reacquainting themselves
with some old familiar faces. Yaaaarrrrr!!!!

Electronic sound artists dreamSTATE celebrate the launch of OM,
their 3rd CD and their 1st live performance release, with (what else!)
a fresh live performance. OM is an ambient soundscape journey
recorded live at the OM Festival 2000 in Trudeau Park, Tweed,
Ontario and in the spirit of that performance, dreamSTATE will
create a free-ranging soundflow to carry the audience off into
an alternative mindspace. They're very happy that psychedelic
lightlords General Chaos Visuals will be along for the trip!

naw is Neil Wiernik (co-curator of the online digital arts quarterly
vagueterrain.net) and his sound is warm, atmospheric and cinematic -
firmly grounded in both the rich traditions of dub studio culture and
formal contemporary composition. The Wire recently described it
as having "the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the
murk and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays." Upon
learning that the Tranzac has a high quality stereo PA, Neil
has decided to perform pieces from his sets at Mutek this
year - works originally arranged for immersive listening.

Look for the ping things table to get your fix of ambient, electronic,
trip hop, dream pop and chill music until the next PiNG - or visit the
pingthings site
now for an extensive " summer heat" sale on over
50 discs. Yep, they're craaaazy!

*ping things will be the exclusive source for dreamSTATE's
new OM CD from August 18th until October.

Tuesday July 11thCanartic and InsideAMind

Austin's Jon Coats and Randall Peterson formed Canartic with
bass player Gerard Smith in 2002. Canartic utilize dub and
downtempo styles as guides to collage electronic shapes around
simple grooves. The chilled results are then injected with a dose
of psychedelia, courtesy of heavily processed guitar. Finally,
samples round out the mix, providing listeners with hints to the
ideas behind the music. Live, Canartic perform as a duo, with
Coats dub mixing in real time from hard disk, and Peterson
adding treatments and his processed guitar.

As the definition of the word "DJ" continues to expand,
InsideAMind emerges in Toronto as a four man scratch band,
further stretching artistic boundaries by performing live original
compositions with vinyl. The scratch musicians, as they call
themselves, bring forth a unique angle to what a group of
DJ's/Producers armed with instruments called turntables can
create. By developing outside the often limiting battle-oriented
mindframe that scratching is too often associated with, the
crew is bringing new life to this ever evolving artform.

Before Sets CD • The Truth In Me by Roger O'Donnell
This week we feature former Cure keyboardist Roger O'Donnell's
splendid solo record which was inspired by and created with a
Moog Voyager synthesizer. Definitely not a concept album,
rather a concept for an album as it was a re-visiting of his
early days of composing using limited equipment, but now
with 25 years of influence and experience to draw upon.
It's definitely a voyage worth taking.

Between Sets CD • Momentium by Jeffrey Koepper
Visit here to find out more about this week's between set
CD and tune in to ping things radio every Sun & Wed

we celebrate by welcoming back our favourite independent
label, Worthy Records for the first of two summer in the city
performances. Night 1 features the electronic manipulations
of
Josh St. Denis and the mysterious sounds of -243 °C.
Ending the night is collaboration between these two
projects with guest Anne Sulikowski joining them on keys.

PHOLDE (Alan Bloor) and ARC (Aidan Baker, Rich Baker
and Chris Kukiel) return to the PiNG with NOiNO (James
Bailey, Matthew Poulakakis
and Jamie Todd)
to bend fold and mutilate sound.

Up first, PHOLDE strokes, bows and carrases his metal
sculptures into an amorphous soundscape to be welded
with the sonic shiftings of the NOiNO aggregate into
an organic, electronic, metallic, sonorous tapestry.

Next up, ARC's guitar drones and pulse driven drums and
percussion will be augmented with the found, sampled,
synthetic sounds and rythmic machinery of NOiNO in an
all out jam to celebrate improvisational bands that were
born out of desire and necessity on the PiNG stage.

Before Sets CD • blacklight days ep by Canartic
We'll be spinning the downtempo sounds of Canartic who
will be visiting the PiNG on July 20th.

Todd Pearson aka DJ Syklik and Lyle Crilly

Rob, Joshua, Todd and Lyle will be playing an assortment of
dreamy improvised pieces, with a strong focus on using potentially
rigid instruments in a free flowing and creative manner and
having the flute fit in as a sometimes melodic, sometimes
electronic/drone based addition.

Tuesday June 6thThe Ministry of Inside Things
(Philadelphia, PA) and
General Chaos Visuals

MoIT's Spring/Summer 2006 Tour touches down at the PiNG to
bring us another taste of their spacemusic.

The Ministry of Inside Things (electronic musician Chuck van Zyl
and electric guitarist Art Cohen) are considered among the most
innovative of US synthesists today. Influenced by the early music
of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Ash Ra Tempel, their
spacemusic has been described as linear, leading the listener across
many sonic terrains. Based on improvisation, The Ministry of Inside
Things
creates electronic realizations that flow from theme to theme,
with the experience often lasting up to two hours. Through use
of textures and atmospheres as well as harmony, rhythm and melody,
the group transports the audience on an internal sonic excursion.

Chuck van Zyl has been recording electronic music & performing in
public for over 15 years. Van Zyl originally worked under the name
Xisle, but is best known for hosting one of the US's most successful
radio shows of electronic music, STAR'S END, for over 20 years.
Art Cohen has been pushing the limits of the electric guitar in the
studio and in live performance for well over 15 years. He uses
processing to enhance the space around his guitar and loops his
live sound to create lush layers to create soundworlds of
immense depth and beauty.

General Chaos Visuals will also be in the house to illuminate
MOIT
and to fill our eyes with their unique blend of visual candy.

Before Sets CD • LiVE by SADU
This week we get a sneak preview of SADU's premiere CD to

CD and tune in to ping things radio every Sun & Wed
